A Dhaka court has sentenced Syed Sohanur Rahman Siam, a leader of the banned Chhatra League, to four years’ rigorous imprisonment in a case involving assets disproportionate to his known sources of income.
Divisional Special Judge BM Tarikul Kabir delivered the verdict on Thursday, court bench assistant Ariful Islam confirmed.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) prosecutor Delwar Jahan Rumi said the court also fined Siam Tk20,000. He will face an additional six months of rigorous imprisonment if he fails to pay the fine.
The court had scheduled the verdict after hearing arguments from the prosecution and defence on September 30.
The recording of testimony concluded on September 13, with the court hearing 11 witnesses. In his defence statement on September 24, Siam pleaded not guilty and sought justice.
The court framed charges against Siam on June 17, ordering the start of the trial.
The ACC filed the case on January 5 last year, with Assistant Director Zakir Hossain as the complainant. The case alleges that Siam acquired illegal assets worth Tk37.3 lakh between September 3, 2021, and June 30, 2024.
After completing the investigation, Hossain submitted a charge sheet against Siam on December 30 of the same year.
According to the investigation, Siam possessed movable and immovable assets worth Tk31.81 lakh that were inconsistent with his known sources of income.
