The High Court has ordered the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) to establish more transportation fitness testing centres across the country within two months.

The High Court bench of Justice JBM Hassan and Justice Md Khairul Alam passed the order on Wednesday.

Supreme Court lawyer Advocate Tanvir Ahmed stood for the writ petition.

On July 31, 2018, the High Court directed to form a 15-member independent national probe committee to survey the fitness of public transports across the country.

Secretaries of road transport and bridges ministry, home ministry and Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) chairman were asked to form the body within a short time.

The High Court bench of Justice Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Ashraful Kamal passed the order after hearing a writ petition filed by Tanvir Ahmed in the form of public interest litigation.

The probe committee was directed to submit a report within three months.

The court also issued a rule seeking explanation as to why the failure of concerned authorities in monitoring the fitness of public transports should not be declared illegal.

Concerned authorities were asked to respond to the rule within four weeks.

The High Court rule came following a tragic road crash in which a bus ran over two students near Kurmitola General Hospital at Airport Road, causing their deaths.
