The Appellate Division has upheld a High Court order granting bail to Chittagong University teacher Anwar Hossain in a sedition case.
Led by Chief Justice Syed Mahmud Hossain, the Appellate Division bench granted a “no order” on an appeal filed by the state seeking a stay order on the HC bail order.
Advocate Motaher Hossain Saju stood for the teacher while Deputy Attorney General Biswajit Debnath represented the state.
Earlier on August 24, the High Court granted six weeks bail to Anwar Hossain.
On May 17, 2018, Asaduzzaman Tanvir, former joint secretary of Chhatra League’s Fatikchhari upazila chapter, lodged the complaint with the court of Magistrate Abu Salem Md Noman of Metropolitan Court-2.
The court ordered the police to probe the complaint after taking necessary permission from the Home Ministry.
Two years after lodging a complaint with the court, a sedition case was filed on July 23 this year against Anwar Hossain, a former assistant proctor of Chittagong University (CU).
Hossain, also an assistant professor of CU’s Sociology Department, has also been accused in the Bangladesh Chhatra League central leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury murder case.
In the complaint, the complainant alleged that the university teacher made derogatory comments regarding the Liberation War and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in a research article.
The article published in a US journal titled – Religious Politics and Communal Harmony in Bangladesh: A Recent Impasse – Anwar Hossain described the Liberation War of 1971 as a communal clash between Hindus and Muslims.
The article was published in “Global Journal of Human-Social Science: C, Sociology & Culture, Volume 17, Issue, 3, Version 1” 2017.
