HC: Why no compensation for Malibagh flyover collapse victims?

The High Court has issued a ruling asking the authorities concerned to explain why Tk5o lakhs should not be paid as compensation to the family of the worker who was killed during the construction and collapse of the Malibagh-Mouchak flyover on March 13. The court also inquired as to why Tk30 lakhs should not be paid to each of the families of the two men who were injured in the same incident, reported UNB. A two-member High Court bench comprised of Justice Salma Masud Chowdhury and Justice AKM Zahirul Hoque passed the order on Wednesday, after a hearing of the writ petition filed on behalf of the victims by Children's Charity Foundation of Bangladesh, a human rights organisation, on June 3.

The secretary and chief engineer of the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), chief engineers of Dhaka South City Corporation and Dhaka North City Corporation, officer-in-charge of Ramna Police Station and managing director of Toma Construction have been asked to respond to the ruling within four weeks time. On March 13, construction worker Shwapan, 40, from Kishoreganj, was killed, while Toma Group engineer Polash and a pedestrian by the name of Nurunnabi were injured when a concrete girder of the Malibagh-Mouchak flyover, then under construction, collapsed on Malibagh level-crossing in the capital. Barrister Abdul Halim represented the petitioner during the hearing.
