The High Court has asked the authorities concerned to explain why an investigation should not be ordered into allegations of corruption in a land purchase deal involving four top Rajshahi University (RU) officials including the vice-chancellor.
The bench of Justice Naima Haider and Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman issued the rule on Tuesday after hearing a writ petition filed by a former student of the university.
Asaduzzaman moved the court on Sunday. The three other officials are the pro-VC, the registrar and the treasurer of the university.
The home secretary, Anti-Corruption Commission chairman, police chief and the four officials have been ordered to come up with explanations within four weeks.
According to media reports which surfaced last month, the university bought a 3.5 katha (2,520 sq-ft) plot last year in Dhaka's Hatirpool for Tk3 crore. The university’s syndicate, however, approved an agreement worth Tk11 crore for the same land.
