The High Court has ordered Grameen Kalyan, owned by former interim government chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, to pay Tk666 crore in taxes claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
A bench led by Justice Md Mujibur Rahman Mia passed the order on Thursday, dismissing rules issued in response to two writ petitions filed by Grameen Kalyan.
Barristers Abdullah Al Mamun and Fida M Kamal appeared for Dr Yunus.
Earlier on October 4, 2024, following the July mass uprising, the High Court withdrew its verdict ordering Grameen Kalyanto pay Tk666 crore in taxes claimed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR).
The verdict was withdrawn by a High Court bench comprising Justice Mohammad Khurshid Alam Sarker and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir. The bench also sent the case records to the chief justice.
The case was later assigned to a new bench for hearing. Following a reassessment, Grameen Kalyan filed two separate writ petitions in 2017 challenging tax claims for the 2012-13, 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016-17 tax years.
After the preliminary hearings, the court issued rules in the cases. The new High Court bench subsequently dismissed the rules and delivered its verdict.
With the writ petitions dismissed, the NBR can now recover the amount from Grameen Kalyan as income tax, lawyers said.
