Students of A F M Kamaluddin Hall at Jahangirnagar University (JU) locked the main gate of the university’s administrative building on Sunday, protesting over what they described as prolonged delays in renovating the hall’s playground and improving its internal infrastructure.
The students began their sit-in around noon to press home their four-point demand. In protest against the administration’s alleged negligence, they also played cricket in front of the administrative building.
The administrative building remained locked until at least 2 pm, according to the latest information.
The students said the hall’s only playground was damaged during the expansion of the university’s Central Library. Although the administration had promised to renovate the field after the construction work was completed, the commitment has remained unfulfilled for the past three to four years.
Their four-point demands include renovating the fourth-floor roof and installing tiles in 19 rooms, constructing internal connecting roads, immediately renovating the playground, and restoring the barbed-wire security fencing around the hall.
Earlier, on August 27, the hall’s student representatives submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor demanding implementation of their demands. They boycotted an administrative coordination meeting, describing it as a “mere formality and a delaying tactic,” and issued an ultimatum for the demands to be met by September 3.
