Students of Jahangirnagar University’s (JU) Rabindranath Tagore Hall and Kazi Nazrul Islam Hall clashed on Monday, leaving at least 10 students injured.
The clash began around 3pm on a road adjacent to Rabindranath Tagore Hall.
Witnesses said the dispute stemmed from a longstanding disagreement over the ownership of six shops located in front of Nazrul Hall.
Students of Nazrul Hall have been demanding ownership of the shops, arguing that they are located in the area adjacent to their hall. Students of Rabindranath Tagore Hall, however, said the shops had been under their hall’s jurisdiction since before Nazrul Hall was established. They accused Nazrul Hall students of attempting to take control of the shops forcibly.
The dispute escalated into an altercation and later a clash between the two groups.
University administration and members of the proctorial body rushed to the scene and tried to bring the situation under control. The students eventually dispersed and returned to their respective halls.
JU Assistant Proctor Dr Abdus Sattar Joy said the situation was now calm. “Both groups have been sent back to their respective halls. The two hall administrations and the university administration will discuss the issue and reach a logical solution,” he said.
