Seven workers were injured in a boiler explosion at Nirjhor Knitwear Ltd garments in the Pagla Taltala area of Fatullah in Narayanganj on Friday morning.

The injured were Shahin, 25; Zakir Hossain, 25; cleaner Sabina Begum, 34; Manju Mia, 28; Arifin, 22; Hridoy, 27; and pregnant Khadija, 20.

Workers said the boiler was old and they had repeatedly asked the management to replace it, but no steps were taken. They said the boiler exploded with a loud sound and caught fire around 9am while workers were on duty.

The injured were later admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).

Following the incident, workers gathered in front of the factory and blocked the road. The blockade was withdrawn after police spoke with factory authorities, who assured them that they would bear the cost of treatment for the injured workers.

Authorities also assured workers that hazardous machinery would be replaced.

Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mahbub Alam said the workers blocked the road in anger after the boiler explosion. He said the issue was resolved after discussions between the workers and factory owner Nurul Amin Suman.

He added that the situation is now calm and workers have returned to work.
