The Auto Rickshaw Workers' Union has demanded a ban on ride-sharing by motorcycles and private cars, citing them as a major cause of traffic congestion in Dhaka.

Approximately 150,000 private cars and 1.2 million motorcycles engage in ride sharing in Dhaka.

The union submitted a letter with 10-point demand to the office of the chief advisor.

It also has called for a ban on CNG auto-rickshaws registered outside Dhaka Metro from operating in the city, as well as a prohibition on rickshaws and vans on major roads.

On Wednesday (October 2), the union's General Secretary, Mohammad Hanif Khokon, submitted a petition detailing their demands.

The demands of the Auto Rickshaw Workers' Union include: completely banning battery-run rickshaws in Dhaka, taking legal action against manufacturers of battery-run rickshaws, canceling all rickshaw and van licenses issued by the North and South City Corporations for public convenience, and granting licenses for 100,000 rickshaws and vans in the metropolitan area.

They also demand the permanent dumping of expired and unfit vehicles, a phased removal of street vendors from sidewalks and roadsides, prohibiting passenger boarding and alighting from vehicles outside designated stops, not checking vehicle documents in areas that would obstruct traffic flow, removing dilapidated vehicles to allow modern vehicles to operate in Dhaka, and ending illegal extortion from public transport on the roads.
