The government has decided to ban three-wheelers and motorcycles on the Dhaka Elevated Expressway, which will be partially open to traffic in September.
The restriction has been imposed to prevent fatal accidents on the expressway as vehicles will be traveling on high speeds (up to 80 km per hour) on the expressway.
Toll payments will be required for vehicles using the expressway, with both manual and automated payment systems available, according to sources.
Bangladesh's first ever elevated expressway, spanning 11 kilometers from the airport to the Tejgaon section, will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader.
The minister said once the entire work of this expressway is complete, traffic congestion in Dhaka city will decrease to a large extent.
As per project details, the first contract was signed on January 19, 2011 and the reviewed agreement was signed on December 15, 2013 and the project completion period was from July 2011 to June 2024.
The total length of the elevated expressway is 46.73 km, including 19.73 km of the main elevated portion.
The expressway will cover Kawla, Kuril, Banani, Mohakhali, Tejgaon, Moghbazar, Kamalapur, Sayedabad, Jatrabari to Qutubkhali on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway.
