Senior officials of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) have inspected proposed sites in Keraniganj for relocating inter-district buses and other transport services as part of efforts to ease traffic congestion and modernise the capital’s traffic management system.
RAJUK Chairman Md Riazul Islam and DMP Additional Commissioner (Traffic) Md Anisur Rahman, along with other senior officials, visited the Jhilmil Residential Project in Keraniganj and the Purbachal area.
The visit followed a decision taken at the fourth meeting on easing traffic congestion and modernising traffic management in Dhaka city, held on August 29 with the Prime Minister in the chair.
During the meeting a proposal was presented to relocate not only inter-district bus services but also city transport services operating from the Badamtoli-Falpatty and Lalbagh areas, involving more than 300 transport services, as well as modern vehicle repair workshops.
The meeting decided to construct a permanent bus terminal in Keraniganj for buses operating to and from 19 districts in the southern region of the country.
The process of acquiring around 75 acres of privately owned filled land near the RAB-10 office in Keraniganj is underway.
Until the permanent terminal is built, authorities have planned to temporarily operate the concerned transport services from the RAJUK Jhilmil project area in Keraniganj.
According to the meeting’s decision, RAJUK will work to implement the temporary arrangement within the next four months.
