Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed has said the Gulistan and Fulbaria bus terminals in the capital will be relocated to Chunkutia in Keraniganj within 3 months.
He made the remarks while speaking to journalists after inspecting traffic management development activities at the Mohakhali terminal on Saturday.
The DMP commissioner said 10 acres of land would be provided at the Jhilmil project in Chunkutia for use as a depot.
“Jhilmil has already given us permission, and we have started work on the depot there,” he said.
The DMP commissioner said around 75 more acres of land would be available there through the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk).
A permanent terminal and depot will be established on the land. There are plans to relocate all transport vehicles and trucks serving 19 districts in the southern region, along with trucks from the Badamtali wholesale market.
Asked how long the process would take, he said: “We have set a maximum timeframe of 3 months. We hope the work will be completed within these 3 months. As soon as the work is completed, the buses from Fulbaria and Gulistan will be shifted there.”
Regarding traffic management at the Mohakhali terminal, the DMP commissioner said: “This will operate under a disciplined system. If anyone attempts even minor irregularities, we will take strict legal action.”
At the event, Member of Parliament Md Shamsur Rahman Simul Biswas said: “We are all frustrated with the intolerable traffic congestion in Dhaka city and the disorder in the road transport sector. We want to change this situation.”
