Asif Nazrul: We must avoid becoming what we opposed

He took oath as one of the advisors of the interim government

Update : 08 Aug 2024, 10:27 PM

Interim government advisor Dr Asif Nazrul has said the members of the newly formed interim government must ensure that they do not repeat the same mistakes that led to the fall of Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

He said: "Our challenge is very big. The power we have fought against, we must ensure that we do not become like them. Otherwise, the extraordinary opportunity that our students and people have created for us—something great, which can be called a second liberation war—will lose its achievement and significance. This is something we must all remember."

He expressed these thoughts in an immediate reaction after taking office as an advisor to the interim government at Bangabhaban on Thursday at around 9:30pm.

In his reaction, Asif Nazrul said: "You know, an abnormal situation has created a law and order situation in the country, and this is normal because there was an autocratic regime for 15 or 17 years. It was a dark era, and people had accumulated a lot of pain. That has now been released. But even then, it went to an excessive level, which is in no way acceptable.”

He added: "We have heard the cries of many police officers, and many stories of minority people; I have heard some myself. This is not something we can support in any way. We must control our anger. Legal actions must be taken to punish those who are guilty."
