While it has been raining heavily for the last few days in different parts of the country, including Dhaka, the Met Office has said that the rain will likely continue throughout this week. However, the extent of rain might decrease.
In the 24 hours till 6pm on Tuesday, Dhaka witnessed 30mm of rain while the highest 208mm of rain was recorded in Khagrachhari.
In a bulletin, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said that the axis of the monsoon trough is currently running through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal to Assam across the central part of Bangladesh. One of its associated troughs extends up to the North Bay.

However, the extended five-day weather forecast says that rain or thundershowers may reduce towards the end of the week.
Caution at seaports
According to the BMD, the Southwest Monsoon is strong in the North Bay of Bengal and adjacent coastal areas of Bangladesh. Due to this, deep circulating clouds continue to form in the North Bay of Bengal and there is a deep pressure. As a result, Chittagong, Cox's Bazar, Mongla and Payra seaports have been asked to show local warning Signal No. 3.
Besides, fishing boats and trawlers stationed in the Bay of Bengal have been asked to move cautiously close to the coast until further notice.
River situation and flood forecast
The Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) said in its evening bulletin that the water level in rivers connected to the Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers is in a rising trend, which may continue for the next 72 hours. The water level of the Ganges-Padma rivers is also rising, which may continue for the next 24 hours.
On the other hand, the water level of the major rivers in the northeastern part of the country is rising and may continue for the next 24 hours.
According to meteorological agencies, the water level of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the northern region will increase especially and may exceed the danger limit for short term at some points.
In the next 48 hours, the water level of the Brahmaputra River may rise and cross the danger level at some points. In the next 24 hours, the water level of the Muhuri, Feni, Halda, Sangu and Matamuhuri rivers in the southeastern region may increase and flow close to the danger level.
Besides, in the next 24 hours, the flood situation may deteriorate slightly in some low-lying areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj and Netrokona districts. The flood situation in Moulvibazar may remain stable.
The water level of the rivers around Dhaka may rise steadily for the next 8-9 days. However, the water in the basins around Dhaka is unlikely to exceed the danger level at the same time.
