Incessant heavy rain for the last four days has inundated low-lying areas of Chittagong city, causing the worst suffering to city dwellers and triggering landslide fears in hilly areas.
In addition to waterlogging in the low-lying areas of the city, roads and streets have become muddy.
Chaktai-Khatunganj kitchen market, one of the country's consumer goods markets, has come to a standstill due to heavy rain.
The Patenga Meteorological Office has recorded 108 mm rainfall in the previous 24 hours till 9am on Tuesday.
The movement of vehicles is being disrupted as water accumulates on the roads of low-lying areas of the city such as Chawkbazar, Sholoshahar, Agrabad CDA, Shulakbahar, Commerce College and several other areas of the city.
For the last four days (since Saturday) it has been raining intermittently and sometimes moderately to heavily.
The meteorological office has said that there is a risk of landslides due to the rain that started last Saturday.
Meanwhile, it has been drizzling in Chittagong since Tuesday morning. Moderate to heavy rain also has been reported.
School-going students as well as office-going people have become the worst sufferers due to this situation.
Md Rafiq, General Secretary of Chaktai Aratdar and Business Association, said that though there is no waterlogging in Chaktai-Khatunganj due to rain, it has affected business and trade. Due to the rain, buyers from far and wide are not able to come to Chaktai-Khatunganj which resulted in low sales. Besides, it has become difficult to walk on the road due to poor conditions.
People have to endure extreme suffering walking on Hamjar Bagh Sangeet Road under the Panchlaish police station of the city. The work of the waterlogging relief project is going on in the canal next to this road. Due to this, the road has become muddy in the rain.
Yusuf Talukder, a resident of the area, said that the work of the project in the city has been going on for a long time. A culvert in the Sangeet area was demolished but its reconstruction has not started till now. This road becomes impassable due to slight rain. The project concerned has been repeatedly urged in this regard, but they are not taking it into consideration.
Patenga Meteorological Office Assistant Meteorologist Ali Akbar Khan said that a total of 108 mm of rain has been recorded from Monday morning to Tuesday at 9am.
At the same time, Chittagong seaport has been asked to hoist warning signal number 3. There is a possibility of landslides due to continuous rain, said the meteorologist.
