Mahir Sarowar Megh, the son of the slain journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, said his parents were killed trying to work independently.

"We live in an independent country. Everyone should have freedom here. My parents were murdered for trying to work independently,” he said after offering fateha at the graves of his parents on Sunday.

Sunday marks the 12 years of the murder of the journo couple. When Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi were killed in 2012, Megh was only five.

Megh is currently 17, and is doing his A levels at a private educational institution in the capital.

Megh has recently designed the jersey for a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) team.

"I am known to everyone for the incident of my parents since childhood. Everyone loves me a lot. But I don't want to grow up with any extra benefits. I want to do something on my own and grow up with my own identity. I want to move forward following the ideals of my parents,” he said.

Megh also said everyone has always told him his parents were good people, and he wants to be like them as well.

Megh's uncle, Naushad Alam Roman, said: "We have been seeking justice for 12 years. The drama that is going on during the investigation and the comments from high-ranking officials are increasing our frustration. Who do I ask for justice? We still live in this country. As long as we are alive, we will seek justice for the murder of Megh's parents.”

Sagar Sarwar, the then news editor of Maasranga TV, and his wife Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were murdered at their rented apartment at Paschim Razabazar in the capital in the presence of their minor son Mahir Sarowar Megh on February 11, 2012.

Law enforcement agencies are yet to make significant progress in the investigation or reveal the motive behind the crime, which took place 12 years ago.

The double murder sparked a nationwide outcry, particularly among journalists, who have been demanding justice for the slain couple since then.

Top officials of the government as well as law enforcement agencies visited the couple’s residence, and their child Megh, and assured their families of speedy justice.

The then home minister Sahara Khatun vowed to bring the killers to justice within 48 hours.
