Update : 15 Jun 2023, 10:08 PM

Two of the arrested doctors of Dhaka's Central Hospital have given confessional statements before a Dhaka court in connection with the death of a newborn and the wrong treatment given to the mother.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court recorded their confessional statements on Thursday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Afnan Sumi recorded the statement of the accused Dr Shahzadi and Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Farah Diba Chanda recorded the statement of the other accused Dr Munna.

After the process, both doctors were sent to jail.

The woman's husband and the newborn's father Yakub Ali Sumon filed with the Dhanmondi police station on Wednesday.

Dr Shahzadi, Dr Munna, Dr Milli, assistants Zamir and Ehsan and hospital Manager Parvez have been made accused in the case, along with some unidentified individuals.

Dhanmondi police station Officer-in-Charge Md Parvez told Dhaka Tribune that they are trying to arrest the rest of the accused.

Earlier, 11 staff including a doctor of Central Hospital were suspended over the incident.

The condition of the mother has become critical after the C-section delivery at the hospital. She is now undergoing treatment at the ICU of Labaid Hospital in the capital.

According to the case documents, Mahbuba Rahman Akhi, who was expecting her first child, had been under treatment of Professor Dr Sangjukta Saha at Central Hospital for the last three months.

Akhi was admitted to the hospital at 12:50pm on June 9 as she went into labour. Though Prof Saha was not present at the hospital at the time, the hospital authorities allegedly bluffed the patient's family, saying she is in the hospital and will operate on Akhi.

"As a result of the negligence of the hospital authorities and wrong treatment of the doctors present at the operation theatre, my child died and my wife is fighting for her life," Yakub said.

Meanwhile, a Facebook status given by Akhi's friend Umme Maya Brishti went viral on social media.

A storm of criticism generated on Facebook against the treatment system of Central Hospital doctors and Prof Sangjukta Saha.

According to family sources, Akhi's condition is very critical for excessive bleeding.
