Police said it was unfortunate that cricketer Shakib Al Hasan, and other guests attended the opening of the jewellery shop of Rabiul Islam Apon alias Arav Khan, despite knowing his alleged involvement in a murder case.

“Bangladeshi cricket star Shakib Al Hasan and many others attended the inauguration of the jewellery shop in Dubai. They attended the program at the invitation of an accused involved in the murder of a policeman,” said Harun-or-Rashid, chief of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at a press briefing on Thursday.

“Arav Khan is a murderer. Even after informing them about this, they went to Dubai to attend the inauguration. It is really sad. I do not know why they did it,” he added.

The official said they would look into the matter of why Shakib Al Hasan, and several others went to the opening even after knowing his criminal history.

“We are currently gathering information. Shakib Al Hasan, Hero Alom, I heard there is one person named Raj in the data. The chargesheet for the murder of inspector Mamun has been completed. These issues will be investigated,” the official said.

Arav Khan, whose real name is Rabiul Islam alias Apon alias Shohag alias Hridoy, is a fugitive accused in a number of cases, including one filed over the murder of Special Branch Inspector Md Mamun Emran Khan in 2018.

Since February, Arav Khan posted videos of several cricket stars from England, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and UAE, who were supposedly invited to the event.

Ahead of the opening ceremony, it was learned from his Facebook that popular writer Sadat Hossain; film actor Prarthona Fardin Dighi; anchor Debashish Bishwas; and singers Israt Jahan Jui, Arfeen Akash, Mainul Ahsan Nobel, Zahed Parvej Pabel, Belal Khan, and Rubel Khandokar, among others, were likely to join the grand event.

In his village, Arav was known as a thief and mugger.

Locals are aware that he was facing several cases, including one for murder, in Dhaka, but they did not know much about him since he did not visit his parents in his village.
