Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Saturday said as the daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she could not accept anything that spoilt Bangladesh's image.
Referring to allegations of corruption in the construction of the Padma Bridge, she said: "I did not come to make money through corruption."
The prime minister made the remark during the inaugural speech of the 22nd national council of the Awami League, which is taking place at the historic Suhrawardy Udyan.
“My father was president, prime minister. I have been made prime minister four times. If our family had been corrupt, we would not have been able to give anything back to the people of the country,” said Sheikh Haina.
“We came to power to give back to the people of the country; we came to work for the people,” she reiterate
Sheikh Hasina said: “I took the challenge to build the Padma Bridge with our own funds. I thank the people of Bangladesh, I thank the people of the country. They gave me courage, strength; and also Allah Rabbul Al-Amin. We built the Padma Bridge with our own funding. Today we have three international standard airports, while the fourth one is in Cox's Bazar.”
Mentioning that roads and bridges had been built across the country, she said: "We inaugurated 100 bridges and 100 roads a few days ago. We were able to do this… Had anyone ever been able to do this before us?... We are the only ones who can make the country progress.”
