Former Awami League lawmaker from Pabna-2 Khandaker Md Azizul Haque Arzu was arrested in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, on Monday night after Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) activists detained him and handed him over to police.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Deputy Commissioner for Media and Public Relations Md Akter Hossain confirmed the arrest.

Jewel Rana, additional deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Tejgaon division, said the former lawmaker was detained with the assistance of local JCD activists and later shown arrested.

He said: “There are multiple cases against him. Further legal action will be taken after verification and investigation of those cases.”

Mohammadpur police said Arzu has a heart condition. Following his detention, police sent him to a doctor accompanied by family members and under police guard, considering his physical condition.

Azizul Haque Arzu was elected as a member of parliament from Pabna-2 in the 10th parliamentary election in 2014 without contest as an Awami League candidate.

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami boycotted the election, in which 153 members of parliament were elected unopposed.
