Police recovered the body of Nur Nahar Begum, 74, a former Awami League leader, from her home in Chittagong’s East Madarbari area on Wednesday evening.
No visible injury marks were found on her body, but two mobile phones she used were missing, police said. Nur Nahar had been suffering from cancer for a long time.
Nur Nahar was the former women’s affairs secretary of East Madarbari ward unit of the Awami League.
According to local sources, her eldest son recently died of blood cancer. She had since been living with her younger son. On Wednesday morning, her son left for work, while her pregnant daughter-in-law was at her parental home, leaving Nur Nahar alone in the house.
Sadarghat police station Officer-in-Charge Ekram Ullah told Dhaka Tribune that tenants noticed the house’s back door open in the evening. They entered and found her dead on her bed.
Police recovered the body and collected evidence from the scene.
The OC said family members reported that Nur Nahar suffered from cancer, diabetes, high blood pressure and other health complications. Although no visible injury marks were found, police are investigating the death. The cause will be confirmed after the autopsy report is received, he added.
