A woman has alleged that a group of armed men robbed her of Tk25 lakh at gunpoint in broad daylight in Raozan, Chittagong, on Tuesday.

The incident took place around 10:30am in the Baruapara area when the woman was travelling to a sub-registry office to register a land purchase.

The victim, Shamsun Nahar, a resident of Ward 8 of Kadolpur union, said eight to 10 armed men travelling on two motorcycles and a CNG-run autorickshaw were involved in the robbery.

She was carrying Tk25 lakh in cash to the sub-registry office to complete the land registration.

Shamsun said a motorcycle blocked the auto-rickshaw's path. Two men got off another motorcycle, took the vehicle's keys and seized the driver's mobile phone.

When the driver tried to resist, one of the men pulled out a pistol. Two more men arriving on another motorcycle then threatened Shamsun at gunpoint and snatched her bag containing the money.

“I told them to kill me if they wanted, but not to take my money. But they took it anyway. It was money my younger son had saved through a lot of hardship. I was going to buy land with his savings. I don't know what I will do now,” she said.

The incident has sparked concern across Raozan.

Barrister Tarek Akbar Khondaker, convener of the central executive committee of the Khaleda Zia Smriti Sangsad, condemned the robbery and expressed concern over the law and order situation in the upazila.

“Such incidents are in no way acceptable,” he said, urging the administration to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.

Raozan police station Officer-in-Charge Saiful Islam told Dhaka Tribune that Shamsun had filed a general diary (GD) with the police.

“Efforts are underway to identify those involved in the robbery and bring them to justice,” he said.

Rising violence in Raozan

A series of violent incidents, shootings and murders in Raozan in recent months has heightened public concern. At least 12 criminal groups are active across the upazila's 14 unions and one municipality.

Nurul Amin, a trader at Pahartali Chowmuhani Market, said even betel-leaf sellers had to pay extortion money to run their businesses.

According to law enforcement agencies, 27 murders were recorded in the upazila between August 5, 2024, and September 2026. Police said 20 of the killings were linked to political rivalries.
