Shahjalal Rumi, the father of a seven-year-old child allegedly sexually abused at a madrasa in Tongi, Gazipur, remains in Bangladesh and has sought anticipatory bail from the High Court in a counter-case accusing him of assault, attempted murder and theft.

Rumi’s lawyer, HM Ruhul Amin Mollah (Hasan), confirmed the matter on Tuesday.

He said Rumi had spent several hours at his chamber from Monday afternoon seeking legal assistance. An anticipatory bail petition has been filed with the High Court in connection with the case lodged against him with Tongi West Police Station. The hearing date has yet to be fixed.

The lawyer said his client respects the law and trusts the judicial system, adding that Rumi wants to ensure his and his family’s safety and seek justice through legal means.

On October 21, a seven-year-old student was allegedly sexually abused at Qariul Quran International Cadet Madrasa in Tongi’s Auchpara area. Following the allegation, the child’s father assaulted the accused teacher, Md Moslem Uddin, who was later handed over to police.

A video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking widespread debate and criticism. Rumi subsequently filed a case over the alleged sexual abuse with Tongi West Police Station.

In a counter-case filed on behalf of the madrasa’s principal, Rumi was accused of stealing Tk17 lakh, assault and attempted murder. He had not been seen in public since the case was filed.

On Monday night, Rumi told journalists that he had left the country.

“I am no longer in this country. I am not thinking about these matters anymore. Whatever happens, let it happen. You all stay well,” he said.

However, according to his lawyer, Rumi is still in Bangladesh and has sought legal protection through an anticipatory bail petition before the High Court.
