Old Dhaka fire: Hotel owner remanded

The accused was arrested late on Monday

A Dhaka court has granted a one-day remand to the owner of Barisal Hotel in connection with the fire in the plastic godown of Chawkbazar, Dhaka on Monday.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Jasim passed the order after the hearing on Tuesday.

According to court sources, police produced accused Fakhruddin in court in the afternoon. 

Deputy Inspector Rajeev Kumar Sarkar of Chawkbazar police, the investigating officer of the case, requested a seven-day remand to the court.

However, the judge granted a one-day remand in view of the application.

Late on Monday night, police detained the accused.

Fire Service officials and eyewitnesses said the fire began at the factory in Kamalbagh area under Lalbagh police station around 12pm on Monday. 

A total of 10 firefighting units brought the blaze under control at 2:20pm.

Firefighters said that the fire originated from the cylinder of Barisal Hotel, which is on the bottom floor of the three-storied building.
