An astounding 44% of Covid-19 patients had to be hospitalized between late-January and mid-April, according to a report released by the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) on Saturday.

The patients hospitalized for Covid-19 were now dying faster than ever before, said the IEDCR report.

The report also mentioned that 48% of people who died between January 28 and April 15 lost their lives within 5 days of hospitalization, while 16% died within 5-10 days of being admitted. Among the dead, 52% were admitted to hospitals within five days of showing symptoms, 26% within 5-10 days , and 12% within 11-15 days.

The number of monthly Covid-19 fatalities in March was 638, but it was 941 in just the first 15 days of April,  the IEDCR noted in its Covid-19 situation report.

It also added that more women were dying of the infectious disease compared to last year. More than three men died from Covid-19 for every woman during the first peak of the pandemic in July last year, while 2.23 men have died for every woman during the survey period.

The situation is taking a toll on people’s mental health as well, said the IEDCR. Research conducted during the pandemic showed that 46% of participants showed signs of depression while 33% exhibited signs of anxiety. About 33% of Covid-19 patients are undergoing treatment at isolation centres, while the rest are being treated at home.

Bangladesh has been witnessing a sharp rise in Covid-19 cases and deaths for the last couple of weeks.

The country recorded 101 single-day deaths on Friday as well as Saturday, the highest ever since the outbreak of the disease.

Till Saturday, the number of Covid-19 infections and fatalities in the country stood at 715,252 and 10,283, respectively.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Director General Dr ABM Khurshid Alam on Saturday said they are analyzing trends in the Covid-19 fatalities to find the cause of the spike and close holes in clinical treatment.

IEDCR Principal Scientific Officer ASM Alamgir said about 40-50% of Covid-19 patients are asymptomatic and unknowingly spreading the coronavirus.

"Almost a year has passed and the situation is changing. The health guidelines now need to be updated based on research and observations since the beginning of the pandemic," he added.
