Covid-19: Bangladesh records 25 more deaths, 1,318 new cases

Death toll reaches 7,217

Bangladesh has registered 25 deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours to Friday morning. With the latest development, the total number of deaths reached 7,217 in the country.

The country also logged a total of 498,293 coronavirus cases with 1,318 people testing positive over the same period.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Friday.

Of the 25 deceased – 16 men and nine women – 18 were from Dhaka division, three from Rajshahi, two from Sylhet, and one each from Chittagong and Khulna divisions.

Of the victims, 24 died at different hospitals and one at home.

So far, 5,505 men (76.28%) and 1,712 women (23.72%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

Since the beginning, 3,944 have died in Dhaka Division, 1,339 in Chittagong, 425 in Rajshahi, 514 in Khulna, 231 in Barishal, 283 in Sylhet, 325 in Rangpur, and 156 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.45%.

The health authorities said 2,024 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 433,614 patients – 87.02% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 14,336 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 159 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 9.19%. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 16.34%.

Currently, 12,312 people are in isolation and 40,074 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

Global situation

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,670,620 lives and infected 75,380,870 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 52,938,025 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.

The US has recorded the most cases since the start of the pandemic with 17,627,070 followed by India with 9,979,447 and Brazil with 7,111,527.

Meanwhile, as many as 317,929 people died from Covid-19 so far in the US.

Brazil has the world's second-highest Covid-19 death toll, after the United States, and the third-largest outbreak, after the US and India.

Brazil reported 184,876 deaths from Covid-19 while death toll in India reached 144,829.
