Covid-19 death toll nears 7,000 in Bangladesh

19 more die, 1,884 new cases in 24hrs

Death toll from the coronavirus infection is nearing the mark of 7,000 in Bangladesh as 19 more people died in the 24 hours to Friday morning.

With the latest figure, the number of total fatalities surged to 6,986.

Meanwhile, the country logged more than 487,000 Covid-19 cases with 1,884 people contracting the virus over the same period. 

With this development, the number of total positive confirmed cases jumped to 487,849, according to the daily virus update released on Friday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Of the 19 deceased – 13 men and 6 women – 12 were from Dhaka division, four from Chittagong, and one each from Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Barishal divisions.

So far, 5,339 men (76.42%) and 1,647 women (23.58%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

Since the beginning, 3,795 have died in Dhaka division, 1,301 in Chittagong, 417 in Rajshahi, 505 in Khulna, 230 in Barisal, 273 in Sylhet, 313 in Rangpur, and 152 in Mymensingh.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.43%.

The health authorities said 3,866 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 414,318 patients – 84.93% – have made full recovery across the country.

As many as 16,323 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 140 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 11.54%. The overall infection rate of the country stands at 16.57%.

Currently, 12,610 people are in isolation and 41,654 are quarantined.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,590,689 lives and infected 70,817,625 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 49,244,216 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 218 countries and territories across the planet.

The United States is the leading country in terms of confirmed Covid-19 cases and deaths with 16,039,796 cases and 299,692 deaths followed by India and Brazil.

India has registered 9,796,992 cases with 142,222 deaths while in Brazil, the number of cases are 6,783,543 and the fatality figure stood at 179,801.
