Bangladesh on Saturday recorded 1,888 more coronavirus cases— the lowest since November 21. Also, this is the first time since November 22 that the daily cases have dropped below the 2,000 mark.
Over the 24-hour span till Saturday morning, the country witnessed 35 more deaths. Currently, the total body count and number of cases stand at 6,807 and 475,879 respectively, according to the daily virus update released on Saturday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Worryingly, Saturday saw a further jump in daily fatalities as compared to just 24 deaths on Friday.
Of the new 35 deceased, 23 were from Dhaka division, two each from Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal, Rangpur and Mymensingh, and one each from Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
Among the victims, 34 died at different hospitals and one at home.
Among the 35 deaths, 23 were male and 12 female, the press release said, adding one was in his 20s, one in his 40s, nine were in their 50s while 24 were above 60 years.
So far, 5,207 men (76.49%) and 1,600 women (23.51%) have died from Covid-19 in the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.43%.
The DGHS said 13,199 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

As many as 13,540 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 118 authorized labs — government and private — around the country and 1,888 new patients were confirmed.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 13.94%.
To date, 2,849,951 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 16.70% so far.
The health authorities said 2,457 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 393,408 patients — 82.67% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.
Meanwhile, Bahrain announced on Friday that it had approved the emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine, becoming the second country after Britain to green-light the drug.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, turning into a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,527,348 lives and infected 66,378,521 people across the world till Saturday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 45,947,434 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has spread to 218 countries and territories across the planet.
The United States is the leading country in terms of confirmed Covid-19 cases and deaths with 14,779,101 cases and 285,705 deaths, followed by India and Brazil.
