Bangladesh has registered 20 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours until Friday morning, taking the number of total fatalities to 6,544.
The country also logged more than 458,000 coronavirus cases with 2,273 people having tested positive over the same period.
With the latest figure, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 458,711, according to the daily virus update released on Friday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
Of the 20 deceased -- 17 men and three women -- 10 were from Dhaka division, three each from Chittagong and Barisal, two from Khulna, and one each from Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions.
All the victims died at different hospitals in the country.
So far, 5,024 men (76.77%) and 1,520 women (23.23%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.43%.
The DGHS said 15,922 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.
As many as 16,378 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 118 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 2,273 new patients were confirmed.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 13.88%.
To date, 2,729,580 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 16.81% so far.
The health authorities said 2,223 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 373,676 patients — 81.46% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,439,585 lives and infected 61,396,051 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 42,476,031 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 218 countries and territories across the planet.
