The body count from the coronavirus infection has surpassed the 6,000 mark in Bangladesh as 21 more people died of the deadly virus in the past 24 hours till Wednesday morning.
With the latest figure, the number of total fatalities stood at 6,004, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said in its daily virus update this afternoon.
The country reached the new milestone of deaths, six weeks after the toll crossed the 5,000 mark on September 22.
The number of fatalities surpassed 4,000 on August 25 while it hit the 3,000 mark on July 28. The body count surpassed 2,000 on July 5.
Covid-19 deaths in Bangladesh crossed 1,000 on June 10 in nearly three months since the first fatality was recorded on March 18.
Of the 21 deceased -- 17 men and four women -- 12 were from Dhaka division, five from Chittagong, and one each from Khulna, Barisal, Rangpur, and Mymensingh divisions.
All the victims died at different hospitals.
So far, 4,621 men (76.97%) and 1,383 women (23.03%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.45%.
Meanwhile, the country logged more than 414,000 coronavirus cases with 1,517 people testing positive in the last 24 hours.
With this development, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 414,164.
The DGHS said 14,328 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
As many as 13,914 samples were tested in the 114 authorized labs — government and private — across the country.
The latest figures show an infection rate of 10.90%.
To date, 2,389,677 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 17.33% so far.
The health authorities said 1,910 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 331,697 patients — 80.09% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 1,222,440 lives and infected 47,958,029 people across the world till Wednesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 34,415,605 people have recovered from the deadly virus which has spread to 216 countries and territories across the planet.
