Covid-19: Bangladesh records 31 deaths in 24 hours, another 1,472 test positive

Death toll reaches 5,555

Bangladesh has registered 31 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours until Monday morning, taking the number of total fatalities to 5,555.

The country also logged more than 379,000 coronavirus cases with 1,472 people testing positive over the same period.

With the latest figures, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 379,738, according to the daily virus update released on Monday by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).  

Of the 31 deceased -- 19 men and 12 women -- 22 were from Dhaka division, four from Chittagong, two each from Sylhet and Mymensingh, and one from Rangpur division.

All the victims died at different hospitals in the country.

So far, 4,275 men (76.96%) and 1,280 women (23.04%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.46%.             

The DGHS said 13,283 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours. 

As many as 13,227 samples were tested in the 109 authorized labs — government and private — across the country and 1,472 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 11.13%.

To date, 2,084,222 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 18.22% so far.   

The health authorities said 1,531 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 294,391 patients — 77.52% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 1,081,934 lives and infected 37,795,463 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 28,378,094 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 214 countries and territories across the planet.
