Covid-19: Bangladesh records 34 more deaths, 1,792 new cases

Death toll reaches 4,668

Bangladesh registered 34 more deaths from Covid-19 in the 24 hours till Friday morning, taking the number of total fatalities to 4,668.

The country also logged more than 334,000 coronavirus cases with 1,792 people having tested positive over the same period.

With this development, the number of all confirmed cases so far has jumped to 334,762. 

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Friday.   

Of the 34 deceased, including 25 men, 19 were from Dhaka division, five from Chittagong, three each from Khulna and Rangpur, two from Barisal, and one each from Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions.

So far, 3,638 men (77.93%) and 1,030 women (22.07%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.39%.

The DGHS said 14,961 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours. 

As many as 14,747 samples were tested in 94 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 1,792 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 12.15%.

To date, 1,704,758 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 19.64% so far.

The health authorities said 2,474 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 236,024 patients — 70.51% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 914,464 lives and infected 28,361,283 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 20,363,269 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
