Covid-19: Bangladesh records 33 deaths in 24 hours, another 2,174 test positive

Death toll reaches 4,281

Bangladesh has recorded 33 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total fatalities to 4,281.

The country also logged more than 312,000 coronavirus cases with 2,174 people having tested positive over the same period.

With this development, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 312,996. 

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Monday.  

Of the 33 deceased, including 29 men, 21 were from Dhaka division, five from Rajshahi, four from Chittagong, and one each from Khulna, Barisal, and Rangpur divisions.

So far, 3,364 men (78.58%) and 917 women (21.42%) have died from Covid-19 across the country. 

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.37%.

The DGHS said 12,089 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours. 

As many as 12,454 samples, including the pending ones, were tested in the 92 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 2,174 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 17.46%.

To date, 1,550,203 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.19% so far.

The health authorities said 2,980 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 204,887 patients — 65.46% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.

The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 850,917 lives and infected 25,410,550 people across the world till Monday afternoon, according to Worldometer.

As many as 17,720,340 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
