Covid-19 deaths top 3,600 with infection rate still over 20%

In the last 24 hours 2,644 people tested positive for the virus

Update : 15 Aug 2020, 03:39 PM

The coronavirus death toll has crossed 3,600 in Bangladesh. 34 more people, including 24 men, have died in the past 24 hours until Saturday afternoon.

With the latest fatalities, deaths so far have gone to 3,625.

The country has also logged 2,644 more Covid-19 cases, taking the number of those testing positive for the virus to 274,525.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest figures on Covid-19 in the country with a press release on Saturday.

Highest body count in Dhaka

Of the deceased, 16 were from Dhaka division, seven each from Chittagong and Khulna, two from Sylhet, and one each from Rajshahi and Rangpur divisions. Mymensingh and Barisal divisions saw no Covid-19 fatalities in the 24-hour span.

Three of the victims died at home. So far, 2,865 men (79.03%) and 760 women (20.97%) have died from Covid-19 across the country.

The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.32%.

One-in-five testing positive trend continues

The DGHS said 12,800 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients in the last 24 hours.

12,891 samples, including the impending ones, were tested in the 87 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 2,644 new patients were confirmed.

The latest figures show an infection rate of 20.51%. To date, 1,341,648 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.46% so far.

After confirming its first three coronavirus cases on March 8, Bangladesh for the first time saw the single-day infection rate going past the 20% mark on May 25.

Since then, the rate has been fluctuating near the limit, meaning almost one out of five suspected samples tested positive for the virus.

The health authorities said 1,012 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.

So far, 157,635 patients — 57.42% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.

People over 50 are the most vulnerable

Just one patient from the 31-40 age group died in the last 24 hours, and two from the 41-50 age group. But the latest daily tally shows the death of nine people aged between 51 and 60.

Shockingly, 22 deaths -- almost two-thirds of the latest count — were in the 60-50 age group.

Till date, people above 50 years of age accounted for more than 75% deaths reported in Bangladesh since March 18, when the country reported its first coronavirus fatality.

Bangladesh still hosting 7th most active cases

With 113,265 coronavirus patients across the country, Bangladesh is now ranked seventh in terms of having the most active cases.

The US is topping the list, with 2,430, 361 active cases, according to Worlodmeter, as of 6:30pm on Saturday.

In Asia, Bangladesh is in second position in terms of the number of active Covid-19 cases, following India, which has 671,693 cases.

It is worth mentioning that Bangladesh’s position in both regional and global lists has remained static for the last few weeks.
