Bangladesh has crossed the 250,000 mark in confirmed cases of coronavirus with 2,851 people having tested positive in the past 24 hours.
With the latest figure, the number of total confirmed cases has jumped to 252,502.
The country also recorded 27 more deaths from the deadly Covid-19 over the same period, taking the number of fatalities to 3,333.
Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Nasima Sultana, revealed the latest figures from Dhaka on Friday afternoon, in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.
She said 13,253 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients between Thursday and Friday mornings.
As many as 12,699 samples were tested in the 84 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 2,851 new patients were confirmed.
However, the latest figures show an infection rate of 22.45%.
To date, 1,237,823 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.40% so far.
The DGHS official said, of the 27 deceased, including 24 men, 13 were from Dhaka division, five from Khulna, three each from Chittagong and Rajshahi, two from Rangpur, and one from Barisal division.
So far, 2,630 men (78.91%) and 703 women (21.09%) have died of Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.32%.
Prof Nasima said 1,760 people have recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 145,584 patients — 57.66% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by the new coronavirus strain, later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus broke out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 718,061 lives and infected 19,281,928 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 12,377,133 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
