Bangladesh has witnessed 50 more deaths from Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, taking the number of total fatalities to 3,234.
Besides, the country also logged more than 244,000 coronavirus cases with 1,918 people testing positive over the same period.
With this development, the number of all confirmed cases so far jumped to 244,020.
Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Nasima Sultana, revealed the latest figures from Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon, in a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.
She said, of the 50 deceased, including 44 men, the highest figure of 29 was from Dhaka division, five each from Chittagong and Rajshahi, four each from Khulna and Rangpur, and one each from Mymensingh, Sylhet, and Barisal divisions.
So far, 2,549 men and 685 women have died from Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.33%.
The DGHS official said that 8,123 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients between Monday and Tuesday mornings.
As many as 7,712 samples were tested in the 83 authorized labs -- government and private -- across the country and 1,918 new patients were confirmed.
However, the latest figures depict an infection rate of 24.87%.
Till date, 1,201,256 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.31% so far.
Prof Nasima said 1,955 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, a total of 139,860 patients — 57.31% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The novel coronavirus had broken out in China's Wuhan city in late December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 697,790 lives and infected 18,465,900 people across the world till Tuesday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 11,693,523 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
