Death toll from the Covid-19 infection has crossed 3,100 in Bangladesh as 28 more people have died of the deadly virus in the past 24 hours.
It is the second time in the month of July that Bangladesh recorded less than 30 deaths in a 24 hour span. On July 4, 29 deaths were recorded in a single day.
With the latest figure, the number of total fatalities surged to 3,111.
Meanwhile, the country has logged more than 237,000 Covid-19 cases with 2,772 people having tested positive over the same period.
With this development, the total number of confirmed cases jumped to 237,661.
Additional Director General (Administration) of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Prof Nasima Sultana, revealed the latest figures from Dhaka on Friday afternoon, at a daily online bulletin on the Covid-19 situation.
She said, of the 28 deceased, including 22 men, the highest figure was from Dhaka division (13), eight were from Chittagong, three from Rajshahi, two from Khulna, and one each from Barisal, and Rangpur divisions.
So far, 2,446 (78.62%) men and 665 (21.38%) women have died from Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.31%.
Among all deaths, 0.58% were aged below 10 years, 0.96% were aged between 11 and 20 years, 2.80% between 21 and 30 years, 6.59% between 31 and 40 years, 14.05% between 41 and 50 years, and 28.83% between 51 and 60 years. Highest 46.19% deaths were from the age group of over 60 years.
Division-wise, the highest mortality was recorded from Dhaka (47.83%), 24.4% from Chittagong, 5.95% in Rajshahi, 7.1% in Khulna, 3.92% in Barisal, 4.85% in Sylhet, 3.79% in Rangpur, and 2.15% in Mymensingh Division.
The DGHS official said that 13,170 samples were collected from suspected Covid-19 patients between Thursday and Friday mornings.
As many as 12,614 samples were tested in the authorized labs across the country and 2,772 new patients were confirmed.
However, the latest figures depict an infection rate of 21.98%.
Till date, 1,176,809 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 20.20% so far.
Nasima said 2,176 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, a total of 135,136 patients — 56.86% of all infected — have made full recovery across the country.
Covid-19 dedicated hospitals
In the Dhaka metropolitan area, 2,034 patients are undergoing treatment in general beds and 197 others in intensive care units (ICUs) at different Covid-19 dedicated hospitals.
In the Chittagong metropolitan area, 296 patients are currently hospitalized in general beds while 21 are in ICUs.
Other dedicated hospitals across the country currently have 1,467 people hospitalized in general beds. A total of 113 patients are currently admitted to ICUs there.
In general across the country, out of 15,240 general beds, 3797 are occupied while out of 550 ICUs, 331 are occupied.
"Bangladesh has 12,352 oxygen cylinders across the country," Nasima Sultana added.
Isolation and Quarantine
In the last 24 hours, 759 were taken to isolation and 1,017 were released from isolation.
So far, 50,710 were taken to isolation and 18,310 of them are now in isolation.
In the last 24 hours, 2,089 people were taken to quarantine taking the number of total people quarantined at 436,486. With fresh 2,690 people released from quarantine, the total release from quarantine stands at 379,662 suspects.
On March 8, health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed 677,183 lives and infected 17,499,750 people across the world till Friday afternoon, according to Worldometer.
As many as 10,956,521 people have recovered from Covid-19 which has spread to 213 countries and territories across the planet.
