Covid-19: Bangladesh records highest 46 deaths, 3,471 cases in a day

Bangladesh now ranks 10th globally on daily increase in positive cases

Bangladesh on Friday recorded the highest single-day fatality and positive cases with 46 deaths and 3471 having tested positive with coronavirus.

The number of infected cases crossed 81,523 while the death toll now stands at 1,095. 

The surge in the identification of new Covid-19 cases now brings Bangladesh among one of the top 10 countries in the world out of 215 countries and regions, the World Health Organization (WHO) data shows.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures in an online bulletin on Covid-19 pandemic from Dhaka on Friday afternoon.

Both the records have been set at a time when the country has lifted restrictions on public movement and reopened operations of all offices, businesses, and transports on a limited scale, after the end of the general holiday which was extended in phases until May 30 to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic. The limited reopening will remain in force until June 15.

Meanwhile, another 502 people have recovered in the last 24 hours taking the total count of recovery to 17,249 people.

Fatality rate 1.34%

The DGHS official said out of the 46 new deceased, 37 were male and  9 were female.

Nasima, also the DGHS acting director general (DG), said of the 46 deceased, 19 were from Dhaka division, 11 from Chittagong division, 5 from Rangpur, 3 each from Sylhet and Barisal, 2 each from Rajshahi and Mymensingh, and 1 from Khulna division. 

Of the deceased, 32 died in hospitals and 14 at home, she said.

The death toll accounts for 1.34% of the total infected.

Reporting the deaths by age, she said one was between 21 and 30 years, six were 31 to 40 years, three were between 41 and 50, 12 were 51 to 60 years, 15 were between 61 and 70, seven were 71 to 80, one was between 81 and 90 years, and another was aged above 100.

Earlier, Bangladesh registered the highest number of Covid-19 deaths (45) in a single day on June 9. 

Deaths from the coronavirus infection crossed the mark of 1,000 in Bangladesh on June 10, while the country recorded the first fatality on March 18. The country crossed the 100 mark in deaths on April 20.

21.71% test positive in 24 hours

Between Thursday and Friday, 16,950 samples were collected and of those 15,990 were tested in 59 authorized labs across the country including three new private labs across the country, the DGHS official said.

3,471 of them or 21.71% turned out to be Covid-19 positive, she said.

On June 10, the country logged 3,190 Covid-19 cases, highest in a 24-hour span, since the first cases were reported back in March.

In all, 473,322 tests have been conducted so far, she said.

Recovery rate 21.16%

So far, 17,249 people (21.16% of all infected) have made full recovery after being infected by the novel coronavirus.

Across the country, 436 more people were taken to isolation in the last 24 hours, while 188 were released. As many as 9,012 patients remain in isolation now.

During the same period, another 2,888 people were put in quarantine and 2,034 were released. At present, 59,853 people are quarantined across the country.

Among the three private labs, two are in Chittagong – the University of Chittagong and Imperial Hospital Limited – and Dr Lal PathLabs Bangladesh in Dhaka.

Bangladesh ranks 10th globally on daily surge in cases

World Health Organization (WHO) has ranked Bangladesh 10th among the countries with the highest number of new patients detected in the last week. 

The country is also in the top 10 in identifying fresh patients in 24 hours. 

More than 3,000 people tested positive for coronavirus infection in 24 hours in the country for the third day in a row till June 11. 

As the number of tests per day is lower compared to other countries, experts believe that if the number of tests increases, the number of daily detections will increase as well. 

As of June 10, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), Bangladesh ranked 10th with 19,725 Covid-19 cases in the past one week, while Latin American country Brazil topped the list with 184,120 people testing positive over the same period. 

India is in the top three and Pakistan is in the sixth position.

Bangladesh was also in 10th place on June 10 in identifying new patients in 24 hours. 

According to Worldometer, as of June 11 night, Bangladesh ranked seventh among 10 countries that detected most cases in the last 24 hours. However, the country was fourth in Asia. 

In terms of the total number of infected till Friday, Bangladesh placed 19th in the world. 

According to Worldometer, Covid-19 has infected 7,619,199 people globally, of which, 3,858,310 have recovered.

The disease that spread to 215 countries and international territories has claimed 424,249 lives till date.
