Covid-19 body count reaches 175 with Dhaka recording 95 deaths

Dhaka accounts for 56% of the deaths reported in the country

Fatalities from the coronavirus in Bangladesh have climbed to 175, with five deaths from Dhaka reported in the 24 hours up to Saturday morning.

Dhaka remains the worst-hit district with 98 deaths, accounting for 56% of the fatalities in the country.

According to the Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), 95 deaths have been reported from Dhaka city since the first fatality was reported on March 18.

The total number of infections stand at 8,790 after 552 cases were reported in the last 24 hours, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) noted in its daily virus bulletin.

Some 5,827 out of 6,193 samples collected were tested during the same period, DGHS Additional Director General Nasima Sultana said. She added that the rates of sample collection and tests were higher by 3.94% and 4.56%, respectively, than on the previous day.

All of the latest five deaths were reported from the capital Dhaka, she said.

A total of 177 people have now recovered from the virus after three cases were reported, added the senior DGHS official.

Highest deaths, infections in Dhaka

According to the latest figures, 77 deaths have been reported from the rest of the country. The Hill Tracts district of Rangamati remains the only place from where no Covid-19 cases have been reported.

Narayanganj has seen the second-highest fatalities — 39, followed by Munshiganj and Comilla with four deaths each.   

No deaths have been reported in 40 out of the 64 districts across the country. 

Dhaka district accounts for nearly half of the infections — 4,419, with a shocking 4,310 cases reported in the capital.

Narayanganj registered 987 cases, followed by Gazipur with 322 cases. 

Nearly 12% detection rate 

About 12 people out of every 100 tested are found positive for coronavirus in Bangladesh.

The country has so far tested 76,066 samples and reported 8,790 cases, which means the rate of infection stands at a little over 11.5%.

At the same time, the tally of the total number of detected patients rose to 8,790, meaning that the detection rate is a little over 11.5%.

Among the worst affected countries, the ratio is 17.13% in the United States, 16.46% in Spain, 10.38% in Italy and 23.07% in France, according to worldometer.

In South Asia, it is 3.88% in India, 9.23% in Pakistan, 21.66% in Afghanistan, 2.96% in Sri Lanka and 0.09% in Nepal.
