A day-long Rugby tournament titled as Corona Cup was held at crowded Paltan field of the capital on Monday and received massive criticism for its name, the deadly virus that has created one of the worst modern day pandemics.
Bangladesh Rugby Federation (Union) general secretary Mousum Ali, however, explained that their intention was to spread awareness about Covid-19 through a “demo” tournament.
It was no regular or annual event of the federation. Only four team comprising 32 players participated and played at two-third portion of the field while the rest acquired by cricketers practicing at a couple of nets.
Mousum was found instructing volunteer who was distributing facemasks in front of tiny entrance.

“It’s like a demo or advertising tournament to raise awareness about the virus. That is why the name was given,” he said.
“This is the eighth time we campaigned against corona since the pandemic started. The previous events were organised to distribute corona equipment in Dhaka and other districts.”
Government on last month lifted restrictions on sports events that were postponed earlier in mid March when Covid-19 broke into the country. A three-day taekwondo competition concluded at nearby NSC gymnasium three days ago while rugby event was the second in the line.
All players, four referees were tested before the entry to check if they carry corona symptoms, said Mousum. He added, “Some changes of rules also brought in the game. Players asked to avoid celebration because of the pandemic and referees to blow whistle during contacts between players.”
The GS concluded that they will continue spreading awareness about the virus but no plan to hold another competition anytime soon.
