Bangladesh made a good start in the 44th Bermuda Bowl team championship, known as bridge World Cup, as they beat Norway and Egypt in the opening day of the tournament at Wuhan, China on Sunday.

Bangladesh, who are taking part in the prestigious tournament for the consecutive times after becoming champions in the zonal qualifying round beating India early in the year, made a shaky start as they lost to Australia in the opening match by 5-15 VP (23-43 IMP).

Bangladesh conceded a game swing in the seventh board and went down a mini slam in the next board against a game bid in the opposite table to hand over the opponents a substantial lead.

Bangladesh brought back some IMPS thanks to a misfit slam bid from opponents in the 13th board but conceded a game swing in the next board that decided the fate of the match.

Bangladesh missed their ace player Shah Zia ul Haque, a Bangladesh Bank officer, who was supposed to join the side following his official visit in Africa, but they got success in the second match against strong Norway side winning it by 12.55-7.45 VP(47-38 IMP).

Brilliant defending from AHM Kamruzzaman and Moshiur Rahman pair in the close room and an ambitious but successful slam bid in the open room by Asifur Rahman Chowdhury and Monirul Islam helped them achieved an outstanding result against a much stronger side.

The last round match of the day for Bangladesh against Egypt was a high scoring one and in the end Bangladesh prevailed with 12.55-7.45 VP (64-55 IMP).

With 30.1 VP from three matches Bangladesh are on 14th position in the 24-side tournament as each team will face each other once before the knockout round.
