Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) emerged as the champion in the Exim Bank 26th National Men's Handball Championship 2016 after beating Bangladesh Police 31-22 in the grand finale at M Mansur Ali National Handball Stadium on Thursday. This is BGB's 21st national handball title.
The BGB handball team have been dominating the country's domestic scenario since 1984. According to the “Roll of Honour” provided by the Bangladesh Handball Federation, BGB, formerly known as Bangladesh Rifles, have won each and every single edition of the national handball championship with the exception of 1988 when another service team, Bangladesh Air Force, clinched the title.
BGB met services teams, especially Bangladesh Police, as final opposition for the majority of the time in the history of the national championship. Since 2002, Bangladesh Police have been the runners-up on the most number of occasions – 12.
In the last three decades, Dhaka District Sports Association managed to secure second spot for only three times in 1990, 1999 and 2001. Bangladesh Textile Mills Corporation became runners-up only once in 1985 while Bangladesh Air Force and Bangladesh Ansar finished runners-up four and two times respectively.
