Winger Ritu Porna Chakma was the star of the show, netting a brilliant brace to secure the Group C win at Thuwunna Stadium

The Bangladesh women’s national football team secured a historic qualification for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup finals for the first time ever, following a 2-1 victory over hosts Myanmar in Yangon Wednesday - a feat later confirmed by a 2-2 draw between Bahrain and Turkmenistan.

With two wins from two matches, the Bengal Tigresses have claimed the top spot in Group C and cannot be overtaken, regardless of the outcome of their final match against Turkmenistan Saturday.

Winger Ritu Porna Chakma was the undisputed hero at Thuwunna Stadium, scoring a sensational brace to lead Bangladesh to their second consecutive win.

Following their emphatic 7-0 rout of Bahrain in the group opener, Bangladesh once again defied expectations and rankings - Myanmar (55th) stood 73 places above Bangladesh (128th) in FIFA’s latest list - to deliver a performance that has now booked their place on the continental stage.

Head coach Peter Butler kept an unchanged starting XI from the previous match.

Myanmar started with urgency, carving out a chance within just 14 seconds, but Shwe Yee Tun volleyed over the bar.

Bangladesh quickly found their rhythm and struck first in the 19th minute.

After Shamsunnahar Jr was fouled just outside the box, Ritu Porna’s initial free-kick was blocked by the wall, but she reacted swiftly to drive the rebound into the far corner with her favoured left foot.

Five minutes later, Shamsunnahar Jr almost doubled the lead after receiving another pinpoint cross from Ritu Porna, but her effort rattled the sidebar.

Myanmar responded late in the first half, striking the woodwork before seeing a follow-up effort fly over the bar.

Ritu Porna sealed the victory in the 72nd minute with a brilliant solo effort - stealing possession, beating a defender, and curling a precise strike from the edge of the box past the goalkeeper.

The hosts managed a consolation goal in the 89th minute as substitute Win Win finished off a swift counterattack.

Despite one matchday remaining - Bangladesh v Turkmenistan and Myanmar v Bahrain - the head-to-head advantage and points margin mean Bangladesh are mathematically guaranteed to top the group and qualify.

This historic achievement marks a major milestone for women’s football in Bangladesh, who now prepare to make their debut in the continent’s premier tournament.
