Bangladesh blind cricket team defeated hosts England and Australia to secure third place at the seventh edition of the IBSA World Games in Birmingham Sunday.
International Blind Sports Association organized the Games where five teams - India, Pakistan, England, Australia and Bangladesh - took part in men’s cricket event.
Bangladesh began their campaign against England last Monday and won the game by 32 runs.
Batting first, they scored 175 runs for the loss of seven wickets before restricting the home side to 143/7.
They handed Australia a 53-run defeat in their fourth match where they scored 187 losing three wickets after batting first before the Aussies managed 134/8.
In the other matches, Bangladesh, the reigning runners-up of the Blind Twenty20 World Cup held in India last year, lost to finalists India and Pakistan but the two victories were enough to confirm the bronze medal.
“Cricket was not part of World Games before. This is the first time the sport has been included. We beat England for the first time in blind cricket to win bronze. That is why we are so happy,” Bangladesh captain Ashikur Rahman told Dhaka Tribune over phone before returning home Sunday.
The IBSA World Games, a multi-sport event for blind and partially sighted athletes, took place from August 18-27 with the participation of more than 1,000 competitors from over 70 nations.
