Oscar-winning actor Matthew McConaughey has reignited speculation about a possible run for the US presidency in 2028 after releasing a six-minute video urging voters to give independent candidates a greater role in American politics.
Released on October 18, ahead of the 2026 midterm elections, the video encourages voters to take independent candidates seriously rather than dismiss them as protest candidates or spoilers. McConaughey, however, did not announce any plans to run for office or endorse a candidate or political party.
“Independent does not mean you’re middle of the road. Independent is the original road,” he said, presenting political independence as an alternative to the traditional Republican-Democratic divide.
According to The Telegraph, McConaughey also argued that independently elected representatives could encourage compromise in a closely divided Congress and hold both major parties accountable. He urged voters to examine candidates’ positions and determine whether their views aligned with their own beliefs.
The video has prompted renewed discussion about the actor’s political ambitions, although McConaughey has neither confirmed nor ruled out a presidential bid.
His potential entry into politics has been a subject of speculation for several years. In 2021, he considered running for governor of Texas but ultimately decided against entering the race. In July 2024, he described himself as being on a “learning tour” while exploring the possibility of public office. He later said he would not pursue a political campaign at that time.
McConaughey’s latest remarks have also attracted criticism from commentators and social media users who questioned whether independent candidates could split the vote and influence closely contested elections.
The discussion comes amid growing identification with political independence in the United States. According to Gallup, 45% of Americans identified as political independents in 2025, a record high at the time.
For now, McConaughey’s video has renewed questions about his political future, but the actor has yet to announce any plans to enter the 2028 presidential race.
