HBO is developing an 8-episode drama series based on “Crazy Rich Asians,” bringing back several cast members from the 2018 romantic comedy.

Constance Wu, Henry Golding and Ronny Chieng will return as series regulars, while Michelle Yeoh will reprise her role in a recurring capacity. The series will continue the story following the events of the original film.

Based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novels, the show will explore the lives and relationships of its central characters and expand on the world introduced in the film.

Adele Lim, who co-wrote the 2018 adaptation, will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Kwan, director Jon M Chu, and producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson will also serve as executive producers.

The original film followed Rachel Chu, played by Wu, an American-born Chinese professor who discovers the wealth and complicated family background of her boyfriend, Nick Young, played by Golding. Yeoh portrayed Nick’s mother, Eleanor Young, while Chien played his cousin Eddie Cheng.

Released in 2018, “Crazy Rich Asians” grossed more than $239 million worldwide and featured a predominantly Asian cast.

The series follows years of uncertainty over a planned film sequel. Production is scheduled to begin in 2027, while HBO has yet to announce a release date.
