Zakir Hossain Raju participating as Netpac jury chair at the 80th Venice International Film Festival

Prof. Zakir Hossain Raju, film critic, author, and researcher, is invited to preside over the Netpac jury for Asian Film Competition at the 80th Venice International Film Festival this year. Prof. Raju is renowned for his profound insights into Bangladeshi, Korean, and Malaysian screen culture.

The 80th edition of the Venice International Film Festival is scheduled to take place between August 30 and September 9, 2023. Established in 1932, it holds the distinction of being the oldest film festival and remains a top film festival in the world attracting filmmakers, industry professionals, and enthusiasts from all parts of the globe.

The Asian Film Competition in Venice film festival is independently organized by Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC), dedicated to study and circulation of films of Asia and the Pacific. Films that got nominated from Asia will receive recognition under this competition. Ms. Teresa Cavina, ex Artistic Director of Rome International Film Festival and Dr. Viera Langerova, prominent film critic and researcher from the Czech Republic will join Prof. Raju here as co-jurors, evaluating and recognizing contemporary outstanding contributions from Asia.

Dr. Zakir Hossain Raju is currently serving as Professor of Film Studies and the Head of the Department of Media and Communication at Independent University, Bangladesh. His book "Bangladesh Cinema and National Identity: In Search of the Modern?" published by Routledge in London in 2015, took Bangladesh onto the global stage of Film Studies, enhancing the understanding of cinematic narratives from the region. Dr Raju is the first Bangladeshi who obtained PhD in Cinema Studies from Melbourne in 2004.

He served as a Netpac Jury Chair at the Rotterdam International Film Festival in 2015 and 2020. He has also been a prominent figure on the jury panels of various international film festivals in the USA, Estonia, South Korea, France, and Australia. Moreover, his own cinematic creations have graced prominent festivals such as Busan, Hawaii, Singapore, San Francisco, Edinburgh, and AIDC (Melbourn), earning him the 'Commendation of the Jury' award at the European Anthropological Film Festival in 1997.

Before Dr Raju, in 2001, Ahmed Muztaba Zamal, Festival Director of Dhaka International Film Festival served as Netpac jury at the Venice Film Festival.
