Prof. Zakir Hossain Raju, film critic, author, and researcher handed over the Best Asian Film Award at the 80th Venice Film Festival to filmmaker Shinya Tsukamoto for his movie “Shadow of Fire”.

The “Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema” (NETPAC) awards the best Asian films at 60 international film festivals around the world, including the Venice Film Festival. Prof. Zakir Hossain Raju was invited to preside over the Netpac jury for the Asian Film Competition at the 80th Venice International Film Festival this year.

Zakir Hossain said of the winning film, “My co-jurors, Ms. Teresa Cavina, Dr. Viera Langerova, and I, were mesmerised by the film ‘Shadow of Fire’. We know of course that war is a very devastating affair of humankind. But what happens after the war ends, what of the people who survive? The aftermath, the changes in human relationships, Shinya Tsukamoto delicately brought this to life in this film.”

The Venice Film Festival had previously stopped awarding the Best Asian Film category for more than two decades, Netpac relaunched the award at the festival this year.

The Asian Film Competition in Venice Film Festival is independently organised by Netpac, dedicated to study and circulation of films from Asia and the Pacific. Films that got nominated from Asia will receive recognition under this competition. Ms. Teresa Cavina, ex Artistic Director of the Rome International Film Festival, and Dr. Viera Langerova, prominent film critic and researcher from the Czech Republic will join Prof. Raju here as co-jurors, evaluating and recognizing contemporary outstanding contributions from Asia.
