Update : 15 Feb 2022, 05:20 PM

The High Court has fixed February 22 for hearing on the rule on the cancellation of actor Zayed Khan's candidacy in the Bangladesh Film Artistes' Association election.

The bench of Justice Mamnoon Rahman and Justice Khandaker Diliruzzaman set scheduled the hearing on Tuesday.

The Appellate Division on Monday stayed the High Court order on the general secretary post of the Association, upholding the decision of the chamber court for maintaining status-quo over the post.

A six-member Appellate Division bench, headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, passed the order and directed the High Court to settle the issue.

On February 9, the Appellate Division said neither Zayed Khan nor his rival, Nipun Akter, could hold the office of the general secretary of the Bangladesh Film Artistes’ Association until a full-bench hearing on the controversy was held.

On February 8, Nipun moved the Supreme Court against the High Court’s stay on the cancellation of actor Zayed Khan's candidacy in the election over vote-buying allegations.

Responding to an appeal by Nipun Chamber Judge of the Appellate Division Justice Obaidul Hassan passed the order.

On February 7, the High Court stayed the election appellate board’s decision to cancel Zayed’s candidacy after hearing a petition by the actor.

The court also issued a rule asking why the election board’s decision should not be declared illegal and gave the respondents a week to come up with explanations.

On February 5, the election appellate board disqualified Zayed’s candidacy on allegations of paying members to vote for him and of not adhering to the electoral code of conduct.

Nipun was declared the newly elected general secretary of the film artistes’ body.

On January 29, Ilias Kanchan won the president’s post and Zayed Khan the general secretary post in the election. Nipun, who was defeated, fought the decision.

Following her complaint, Sohanur Rahman Sohan, chairman of the appeals board, cancelled Zayed’s candidacy after finding proof of vote-buying and announced Nipun as the winner.
